Holy Orders & Religious Life

"Jesus said to them again, 'Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, even so I send you.' And when he had said this, he breathed on them, and said to them, 'Receive the Holy Spirit.'"
- John 20:21-22

Called to Serve

God calls each of us to holiness in different ways. For some, this call may be to serve the Church through Holy Orders or Religious Life. These vocations are precious gifts to the Church, through which Christ continues His ministry in the world today.

Understanding Vocations

Holy Orders

The Sacrament of Holy Orders has three degrees:

  • Bishops: Successors to the apostles

  • Priests: Co-workers with bishops in serving the faithful

  • Deacons: Ordained for service to the Church

Religious Life

Religious life includes various forms of consecrated life:

  • Religious Sisters and Brothers

  • Monks and Nuns

  • Consecrated Virgins

  • Members of Secular Institutes

Discerning Your Vocation

Signs of a Possible Calling:

  • A desire to serve God and the Church

  • A pull toward prayer and spiritual life

  • A heart for serving others

  • Questions about religious life or priesthood that persist
